FIRST AID
There aren’t many products on the market that are actually licensed for goat use, making it difficult to know what is safe to use.
A group of us on the Goats as Pets UK got together to list our favourite things to use for minor ailments and first aid.
CUTS AND ABRASIONS
VETERYCIN- One-step topical spray for minor wounds. The steroid-free antibiotic-free, no-rinse solution is based on hypochlorous acid, an oxy-chlorine compound similar to that produced by the animals own immune system. Vetericyn will not harm healthy tissue and because it is ph balanced, it will not sting when applied.
For cleaning and protecting wounds, cuts, irritations and scratches. In solution, this product is antibacterial and antifungal. Safe to use around the mouth and nose.
Directions: Remove excess hair from affected area. Clip if necessary. Apply liberally and if the wound requires dressing apply to the dressing. Repeat 3-4 times a day.
LEUCILLIN - This one-step topical pathogen control spray is not only 100% safe and non-toxic with the capability to eliminate up to an astonishing 99.99999% of germs.
Leucillin is a versatile solution with a wide range of applications - cleaning and flushing minor wounds, it is renowned for its soothing properties, providing relief to sensitive skin and addressing irritating eye conditions.
CARR & DAY & MARTIN protection plus - Antibacterial pink ointment with a citronella scent with numerous uses. Ideal to protect and waterproof wounds and as a barrier against mud fever and sweet itch. Ensure the affected area is clean before use. Apply liberally to affected or vulnerable areas, ensuring even coverage. Reapply daily or as required. For best results, apply prior to wet and muddy conditions.
GREEN CLAY - Green Clay has excellent drawing properties so can be used for drying up wet eczema and hot spots and helping control infection in wounds and abscesses. It forms a protective layer over injuries and also naturally repels insects. It has a calming and soothing effect
SUDOCREM - Sudocrem can be used on pets in small quantities to treat minor skin irritations, cuts, or hot spots due to its antibacterial and soothing properties. Apply only a thin layer as ingesting large amounts can be toxic.
DRY SKIN ITCHING AND SORENESS (unexplained)
CAMROSA - Camrosa Ointment is an effective water repellent barrier against flies, midge bites, wet, mud, mites and against some of the effects of pollution.
The ointment promotes the natural healing process of cracks, sores, callused skin, fixed scabs, superficial wounds, sunburn and soothes itchy, irritated, dry skin. This keeps the skin supple encouraging good skin condition, which is necessary for healthy hair regrowth.
The ointment has been used with great success on dry, brittle, cracked hooves and maintains good hoof condition as well as healthy horn growth. It does not melt in heat or wash off in rain.
Also available in a shampoo.
COOPER& GRACIE products - The anti-itch dog shampoo contains natural essential oils to calm dry, itchy skin instantly. Peppermint, spearmint and tea tree soothe and relax tired and strained muscles. Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties help to clean minor wounds and grazes and aid itchy skin conditions instantly. The anti-itch spray compliments the shampoos and makes a good alternative during the winter when you don’t want to get your goat too wet.
LICE & MITES
BARRIERS LOUSE POWDER - Fully HSE approved. A 100% natural insect repellent for use against biting and blood-sucking lice by direct application to horses, ponies, donkeys, cattle, goats, rabbits, birds and other small pets. One application remains active for up to six weeks depending on weather conditions. Suitable for use in organic farming systems.
DIATOMACEOUS EARTH - A safe and effective pest control solution derived from naturally mined minerals, specifically fossilized remains of diatoms.
SPOT-ON - Fly & Lice Spot On Insecticide is a ready to use, oil-based topical ectoparasiticide containing deltamethrin at a concentration of 1% w/v.
It is designed for the control of various parasites on cattle, sheep, and lambs, ensuring the wellbeing of livestock by managing infestations effectively.

NAFF OFF - Contains citronella which will repel biting insects.
BATTLES SUMMER FLY CREAM - A soothing antibacterial fly repellent cream to aid in the management when fly strike and maggots are a problem (in sheep, but also considered a fly repellent for goats)
URINARY CALCULI
AMMONIUM CHLORIDE - Used every few months to help reduce the risk of struvite stones. Not to be used daily as it will change the PH and cause digestive issues and can encourage the growth of calcium stones.
ORF
ORPH PASTE - A soft emollient cream to be used on lambs and sheep showing signs of orf. Contains 1,5 pentanedial in a petroleum base.
PROBIOTICS
GOAT NUTRITION GO-BIOTICS - The naturally occurring bacteria in Go-Biotic have been selected for their proven beneficial effects and optimum proliferation, helping to maintain a stable intestinal population and assisting in crowding out harmful bacteria in the gut. Sprinkle on feed or mix with water to drench.
INGESTION OF TOXINS
CHARCOAL - For Suspected Toxicity - Administer 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon mixed with water every 15 minutes for one hour.
BICARBONATE OF SODA - Mix with water and drench, quantities don’t matter too much. Alternatively you can give them a bowl without water and allow them to self administer. Massage the goat's stomach area to help move the gas.
OIL - 200ml of any food grade oil can be drenched to help alleviate bloat.
FEET or HORN PROBLEMS
HOOF PUTTY - A flexible, semi-permanent wax that seals and stabilises horn separation cavities and punctured soles in your goats feet.
GOLDEN HOOF - A zinc sulphate bath for foot rot, scald and separation.
DEHYDRATION
HYDRAFAST (electrolytes) - for use during dehydration, times of stress or when scouring.
